A Typical Day In The Life Of Amrita Miss, Teacher Extraordinaire ( by Amelia in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, Nepal )

After volunteering at a village school in Nepal for several weeks, you might have thought I’d settled into a comfortable routine. But no, the life of Amrita (my Nepali name, meaning Goddess of Nectar) was still pretty chaotic. Here's typical day in my experience at Manakamana School, Dakshin Dhoka, in the Kathmandu Valley...

Manly Scenic Walkway: Escaping Sydney's Crowds ( by Amelia in Sydney, Australia )

When many people think of Sydney, they think of the spectacular harbour with its famous bridge and opera house, of the CBD with its skyscrapers and hustle and bustle, of the nightlife and parties on the beach. And of course all of these things are integral to the city’s character. But there’s a lot more to it than that.

Chasing the Cupcake: Sydney's Sweet Sensations ( by Amelia in Sydney, Australia )

It’s pretty well known that I have a sweet tooth and a love of all things chocolate, biscuit and cake related. My friend Caroline is just as bad, so when I arrived in Sydney for a holiday she made it her mission to ensure I experienced the full sweet sensations the city had to offer.

Sydney's Harbour Bridge is no secret; in fact, it's one of the most instantly recognisable images from Australia.

A Day At the Races: Melbourne Madness ( by Amelia in Melbourne, Australia )

When I told my friend Sooze I'd visit her home town, she suggested we go to the Melbourne Cup and I readily agreed. At that point, I had no idea of the style we'd be going in - she had managed to swing us corporate tickets in the Winners' Enclosure.

Nara: Japan's First Capital ( by Amelia in Nara, Japan )

I had turned down a night out in Osaka with some nice guys I met in Kyoto, to go with my original plan of visiting Nara for a rather different experience. Would Japan's first capital city live up to my expectations?

Getting into Hot Water... Nakedness in NZ ( by Amelia in Helensville, New Zealand )

Despite my first trip to NZ being in winter, I was still struck by the cold when I arrived back over four years later. I felt freezing, even though spring was supposedly just around the corner.

I therefore decided to try as many different methods to get warm as possible, with some interesting results. I could tell you about drinking chilli hot chocolate, shopping for merino wool, wearing all my clothes at once, hiding in my sleeping bag and stealing sheep to cuddle, but that wouldn't be half as interesting. Instead I'll focus on my hot water adventures.

Getting into a Zen-like State in Kyoto ( by Amelia in Kyōto, Japan )

When I travelled alone on the speedy shinkansen to Kyoto from Nagoya, I envisioned a few days of quiet and contemplation - sitting in peaceful gardens, finding myself, thinking about the more meaingful things in life.

Doubtful About The Sound? Setting Sail in NZ ( by Amelia in Doubtful Sound, New Zealand )

When my sister Juliet suggested a cruise on Doubtful Sound I jumped at the chance.

I'd been to the more accessible Milford Sound four years previously on a road trip with my boyfriend, but never made it quite as far south as Doubtful in the south-west corner of New Zealand. Captain Cook is responsible for the unusual name; he first christened it 'Doubtful Harbour' on sighting it from the Tasman Sea, and didn't enter the inlet as he was 'doubtful' it was navigable under sail. Whalers and sealers later named it Doubtful Sound, though technically, it isn't a sound, but a fiord: formed when a glacial valley is filled by rising sea water levels, it is a long, narrow estuary with steep sides. Most areas are only accessible by sea, as the road network is virtually non-existent - as is the human population.
