Cordoba is one of the “must see” towns in Southern Spain. The interesting combination of cultures of the Spaniards, the Moors, Gypsy and the Jews can be seen in the amazing monuments and neighborhoods in Cordoba. Arab baths are abundant, luxurious and richly decorated with tile and detailed patterned plasterwork. Gypsies are prolific in the main plaza adding a mysteriously Spanish element to the experience as you wander through the town.

The Medina Azahara Palace is a great place to get lost in and travel back in time while the Mezquita is a dramatic reminder of the clash of cultures historically. The magnificent Mezquita (Mosque) was later turned into a Catholic Cathedral. Hundreds of dramatic arches typical of Moorish architecture create patterns and shadows throughout the structure that make it a photographers dream.

Cordoba is also known for its traditional bodegas with delicious tapas of Jamon Serrano (cured ham), olives and tortilla make great accompaniments to the Spanish Sherry and red wine so common to the area. Keep in mind that in Andalucia, it is most common to stand at the bar….very few Spaniards actually sit. So, if you want to blend in like one of the locals, no sitting! After three years in Southern Spain I don’t really know why they always stand, but…..when in (Spain) do as the (Spaniards) do!
