Camburg's travel blog in Alliance, United States. He went on 20 of August 1999 for 1 day. He went for tourism. Camburg went with just me. He got there and around by car or van. camburg's travel verdict is: recommended.

I knew it was there but wasn't interested. Thought I would drive on past and head for the mountains in Colorado. But then the murky grey outlines appeared through gaps in the trees and I knew I had to pull over. America has many bizarre roadside attractions but this one takes the cake.

Like much of Nebraska, the fields stretched far into the distance, and plonked in the centre of this one was Carhenge. It is exactly as it sounds, with car wrecks painted grey and formed in an exact replica of Stonehenge. The only difference is out here the druids have names like Billy-Bob and Earl and their icon of worship is a moonshine keg.

It could be one of the few examples when a tacky replica is actually more interesting than the real thing.

    Wonderful Americana: Pure genius.
This looks well worth a visit. Was there anything else worth seeing within 100miles?

There's not much near it, but not far away are the Black Hills, Badlands, Crazy Horse and Rushmore of South Dakota and the Devil's Tower of Wyoming. I did a road trip through this area and was amazed, especially by South Dakota, which is a very underrated and underappreciated area of America.

An area of the country that is so much more interesting to drive through than the flats of Kansas. I'm gonna keep this place in mind next time I drive west.
