This incredible monument, still a long way from being completed, is just around the corner from Mt Rushmore and makes the Shrine of Democracy seem miniscule by comparison. All four Rushmore heads would fit into Crazy Horse's head alone.
The work began nearly sixty years ago, with sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski perched on the side of a mountain with a chisel and an incredible vision. And it was exactly that story and the sheer size of the project that took my breath away when I visited. Crazy Horse's face is finished and there's a long flat crest that will become his arm pointing 'to where his dead are buried.'
The world's largest mountain structure is much more striking and symbolic than Rushmore's sagging heads.

The sheer scale and vision of the Crazy Horse momument are amazing; it's also amazing that it's so little known when the Rushmore heads are so famous. Typical of the contrasts of this corner of the States. Did you go to Wounded Knee? I drove around here without much of a plan and it blew me away that I started the day reading chipped and blistered signs at Wounded Knee - where, as with the Crazy Horse Momument, they refuse federal funding to keep the momument going - and ended it in drinking tequila with cowboys in a swing-door sawdust saloon bar in the town of Custer.
