Jsikorsky's experience was in Cape Town, South Africa. He went on 10 of March 2007 for 1 day. He went for beach, nightlife, relaxation. Jsikorsky went with a friend. He got there and around by airplane/helicopter. jsikorsky's verdict is: you must go here.

Imagine being in a tiny fishing boat in the middle of the ocean, no land in sight and you're in shark infested waters. The captain starts throwing fish parts behind the boat (chumming) hoping to attract these massive sharks so that they get closer and closer to the boat. Now imagine being told to suit up and jump in a cage!

Before actually deciding to cage dive, I did a bit of research to find the best company to go with. Apparently the locals said to find Shark Lady, but my friend ended up calling the wrong number and we were taken to another outfit nearby. As we already pre-booked and our only chance of going out on the boat was that day, we decided to go for it and try our luck. I was a bit hesitant after seeing the cage, as the bars were litterally no thicker than chicken wire! Well, maybe I'm exagerating a bit, but you get the idea. Once we were out in the middle of the ocean, I decided that if I didn't volunteer first, I probably wouldn't do it.....so in I went when we saw the first shark fin.

I have to say that this was one of the most exciting things I have ever done. To jump in the water when there are two massive great whites circling the boat was a thrill beyond belief. The only issue was that the water was so choppy and the cage was rocking back and forth against the boat, so I couldn't concentrate on viewing these beasts under the water. I also didn't know what to do with my fingers, as I had to hold the cage because it was rocking and all I could think about was having my hands bitten off! Luckily this didn't happen. After about five minutes, I'd had enough and got back in the boat.

I'm glad I did this, but I have to say that I now don't agree with the whole idea of chumming the water to atract the sharks. It's great for tourism, but it's only making the sharks more comfortable around humans.

I also went surfing around the corner from Cape Town and all I could think about was these massive beasts underneath me...thinking I was a seal. Thankfully I'm still here and ready for my next adventure.

That's really brave Joe!I've been thinking about doing this for quite a while but thinking about it and doing it are two very different things - so I've decided to hold off for the time being ;)

P.S. Your last name sounds similar to Polish. Have you got any Polish roots ?

Awesome- I can just imagine your dilemma of where to put your hands. What did the sharks do? How close did they come to your chicken-wire cage?

I'd love to hear more...what kind of suit did they put you in? How often do tours like this take place? What were the sharks like when you were actually face to face with them? Would you recommend the company you went with?

you raise a good point about the ethical issues of chumming...there really has been a marked increase in shark attacks since such practices were introduced. i say, get your kicks elsewhere, and let the sharks be
