Madisteps's travel blog in Figueres, Spain. She went on 21 of November 2006 for 1 week. She went for adventure. Madisteps went with just me. She got there and around by walking, train. madisteps's travel verdict is: you must go here.

Salvador Dali has personally designed his own museum in this tiny town about two hours from Barcelona by train. Dali has an incredible imagination that is in full force here. From rigging up an old taxi to rain inside to creating giant teardrops using blue condoms, he really has out done himself.

A taxi you can pay to rain!

The museum itself takes at least two hours to explore due to the misleading hallways and disconnectedness of the floor plan. Clearly, Dali designed it this way on purpose...you can guess why. There are hidden exhibits that are worth looking for and even some interactive art pieces. For example, don't miss the Mae West room which is best viewed from the top of a rickety ladder and looking through a misshaped giant lens.

Dali continues to shock the senses with his portrayal of anatomy, his voluptuous lover, and his metaphorical self portraits.

I've given all I have to my work

This is my favorite museum in the world and I know it has something to offer all types of art lovers. Beware: it is closed on Mondays...learned that the hard way.

This is a great trip, don't miss it. If you have the inclination, here is a good itinerary from Barcelona. First, rent a car. Get out of town early, before 7 a.m. You can drive to Gala's home, a castle, in Pubol, first. It's as quirky and fun (and remote) as Salvador's home. Really worth it, art, antiquities, mementos, the lot. We were trapped by sheep on the road in, a real Spanish experience. From Pubol to the Dali museum in Figueres, cool, but compared to Pubol and Port Lligat, just OK. Then to Dali's home in Port Lligat for late afternoon (maybe Cadaques along the way for a late lunch). You must reserve for his home. In the summer you can get, e.g., a 7 p.m. booking, which means you can be back in Barcelona by 10-10:30 (their dinner time). This was the most memorable day I've ever had in Spain, and I'm not even a huge Dali fan.
