The Ice Lantern festival and Chinese New Year are one of those must see things to do in my opinion. The sheer size and detail of the ice and snow sculptures are just amazing. Especially so at night when they are all lit up in glorious technicolour.
Some of the hardy locals swim in a cut out section of the frozen river Songhua.
Zhaolin Park is quite spectacular after dark when the ice scultpures are lit up in various colours. By day the ice sculptures can be seen in their intricate detail.
The snow scuptures in Sun Island are well worth seeing. Even the streets have ice scultpures along them.

Reefermaker's experience was in Harbin, China. He went on 24 of January 2001 for 5 days. He went for tourism, adventure, culture. Reefermaker went with just me. He got there and around by walking, airplane or helicopter. It is reefermaker's favorite place.
The snow carvings are many and varied. They are made in intricate detail. People can be seen making them in the park and elsewhere.
By day the ice sculptures look as if they are made out of crystal clear glass but by night they are lit up in bright colours.
The wonderful city of ice - video clip
The city made completely of ice is lit up in bright colours. It has massive Ice Sculptures which have to be seen to be believed. Even on video it does not do it justice.
